rapport - a relationship of mutual understanding or trust and agreement between people.
Why is rapport necessary?
Have you ever been at a party, a meeting or ...well...anywhere a group of people are together, and been absolutely amazed to see how people seem to gravitate towards one specific person in the room? Have you ever walked into a room full of people and felt awkward? (wondering inside your head things like "Who am I going to talk to?" "Do I know anyone here?" "Where are my friends???"
Like a fish out of water, striking up a conversation can be awkward and uncomfortable. Probably everyone has at one point or another felt uncomfortable when faced with meeting and talking to new people. Thinking back to high school, remember how it felt to be on a first date and so uncomfortable...not sure what to talk about or how well the conversation will go? Eeks!
Ever wondered why people gravitate to some people, while others stand by wondering helplessly why they are ignored? It doesn't matter if you're the nicest person in the world and wouldn't hurt a fly, if you are not good at building rapport you may be lonely, or not do as well in business, nor on the social scene. But you don't have to accept it.
There are some people that naturally know how to connect with anyone. They make meeting new people and building rapport look effortless and fun. But the majority of people feel uncomfortable and ill at ease when meeting new people and just can't figure out how to make a connection.
